Reflections on Sensory Encounters

Introduction

Welcome to Reflections on Sensory Encounters. This website is a work in progress and a way for me to share my ideas and commentary on qualitative research and creative, embodied methods.

Focus

My current commentaries showcase creative qualitative methods and how they can be mobilised to research materiality and everyday life.

Introducing Entries.

1. Drawing What We Smell

Arts-based methods are becoming increasingly popular in social science research. Arts-based methods is a catch-all term that envelops all methods that evoke creativity in expression. This entry introduces how I incorporate arts-based methods into my research through the example of smellsketches.

2. (Extra)Ordinary Everyday

Everyday life is often situated as mundane and ordinary. Characterised by repeating the same practices over and over. This entry explores how the ordinary everyday can be researched as something which is extraordinary and meaningful through mundane methods.

3. Comments on Intentionality

Intentionality is all about the power of the mind - possessing the distinct qualities to reason, to represent and communicate meaning in novel and powerful ways to others. This entry focuses on embedding intentionality into the foundation of research practice, but to also recognise the impact of your world.
